Haven’t gone wrong with your recommendations before. I looked at the website and noticed the Constellation. It doesn’t have the magnetic base. It clamps on. It has 500 lumens, which, for my use, may be sufficient.

Thanks for the referral on these lamps. I am absolutely going to check them out and probably buy one. My shop space will probably lead me to mount it on the ceiling then just reach up and point it to wherever I need it.

On a tangential direction I will note that four-foot LED shop tube lights from Costco or similar are so much better than fluorescent fixtures they are almost different in kind.

But you are absolutely correct that nothing can substitute for directional task lighting. Try sharpening a saw with overhead lighting and feel the headache coming on.

Sure, that is an option. You are referring to the $9.99 Jansjo lamp from Ikea that Christopher Schwarz wrote glowingly about a few years ago. It emits a mere 70 lumens and its construction will not even approach the quality of the 870-lumen Super Nova. A weak lamp such as the Jansjo will need to be set annoying close to the work at hand and require constant movement.

There are always cheaper options in woodworking tools – a Buck Brothers plane from the home center is a similarly small fraction of the price of a Lie-Nielsen. True, a cheap lamp may meet one’s needs but I believe that it almost always pays to buy quality tools and equipment.
