Rob,

Yes, I got mine from Josh Clark (Hyperkitten.com). Patrick Leach and Jon Zimmers would be two other sources.

Eric,

Thank you for bringing up the snail countersink. I've never used one. I have seen pictures of them (in Encyclopedia of Furniture Making, by Joyce/Peters, and some of the older woodworking books) and it seems like a good design.

Maybe they can be found on the vintage tool market.

Here's a photo of one on Wiktor Kuc's great website:

My current favorite countersink is a old snail-head variety for a hand brace. My opinion may change when it comes time to sharpen it, however. Unless I have a lot of holes to drill, I usually prefer doing counterskinks by hand. I have the Beall counterskink - great in a drill press, not so useful by hand. I've heard good things about the hand countersink that Lie Nielsen sells. Like you, I have lots of these things lying around. They are one of those little accessories that seem to multiply on their own.

Ralph,

The #2 type in the photo works well in high speed steel for metal.

Theodore,

The one you reference does not seem to have the radially asymmetric flutes, as far as I can tell from the photo on the Lee Valley website. That is a key to the effectiveness of the old one. "Rosehead" type countersinks can be found from many suppliers, but I haven't seen one with the asymmetric flutes.

It isn't quite the same, but Lee Valley has a Hand Countersink that looks similar to number five. Go to the product page below, and view the additional photos available. It has an extra flute, but looks like the same design to me. However, I have never used one, so I don't know how well it works.
