Rob, my love affair with poplar began five years ago when we purchased a piece of property with several large majestic poplar trees on it. I had to take down one tree in order to make room for the house we were building. The tree was about 60" across at the base, I had a local saw mill operator mill it up for me. I yielded about 900 bd ft with several boards 24" across. It has been my go to wood for all sorts of things, drawer sides and bottoms, painted trim for the house along with shelves and utility cabinets. I've never understood why poplar gets such a bad rap, I love it!

(PS) Thanks for your blog
