I can&#039;t say for sure what happened with your table top but consider the timing. If it happened just about immediately after the wood was removed (sometimes AS it&#039;s being removed or opened up during resawing), it&#039;s stress release. A moisture issue would be slower - over hours or days. It can be both, too. It does seem like a pretty minor amount of wood that was removed so I don&#039;t know.

Check out the posts on resawing that I linked to in this post for how to predict (usually!) what will happen when wood is opened up.

Rob, I&#039;ve had that occur with a work table top  run through a large belt sander.  The table top was made of kiln dried 2x4&#039;s and I don&#039;t think we took off more than a 1/16 or 1/8 of an inch.  The problem was we only sanded one side.  I think potato chip adequately describes what happened.

I&#039;ve always assumed that it happened because of uneven moisture exchange.  I never considered the possibility that it might be the release of internal stress in the wood.

I guess my question is how do you make the distinction and how do you avoid it?  I&#039;m looking forward to your next post.]]></description>
