Christopher,

Sounds like an effective and economical approach.

Ken,

I agree, the Veritas BU jack is so versatile. It is pictured in this post, complete with Bill's great handles. Here's more info on it:

Good advise. I am a power tool woodworker who wants to do a lot more with hand tools like planes. I am going to bookmark this post for future reference.

If I was asked which plane to buy first my answer would be the Veritas low angle jack plane. It isn't the first plane I bought but I wish it had been. it has become the first full size plane I reach for when something needs to be planed. Adding the plane irons available that are ground to different angles or toothed simply adds to the versatility of this very well engineered tool. While I haven't made a shooting board, edge guide, or other fixtures for this plane I'm pretty confident I will in the near future. Adding Bill Rittner's tote and knob turn a really good tool into a really great tool for a very modest investment

I agree completely with your thoughts about the need for "hybrid" woodworkers to invest in handplanes. Years ago my strategy was to buy one top-of-the-line smoother (4 1/2), understand what the standard was, and then fettle other used planes to this standard -- and as you say, aftermarket blades make a world of difference. BTW, I enjoyed your article in Woodwork Magazine!
