Thanks. The gel varnish worked on those particular boards of big leaf curly maple. As you know, YMMV, so test runs are necessary. 
And, yea, let oak be oak.

		<description>I am going to bookmark this post for future reference since I like figured maple and am still looking for the perfect finish for it.  I agree with your comments on filling oak.  I only did this one time and have never repeated it.
